Good home exercise equipment can help us reverse or slow the ravages of our sedentary lifestyle. It can help correct and prevent the development and progression of chronic diseases-back pain, high blood pressure, coronary disease, obesity, and diabetes. It can help offset the effects of excessive dietary fat intake, high bad cholesterol levels, and smoking. “It is well known that there are considerable health benefits associated with moderate exercise,” says Tim Ray, DC, and president of the ACA Sports Council. “For this reason, we recommend that people participate in exercise programs designed to accommodate their individual needs. While moderate levels of exercise are safe for most asymptomatic individuals, if there are any health risks, such as the safety and suitability of an exercise, or if someone has a history or symptoms of arthritis, hypertension, cardiac, pulmonary, or renal diseases, it is wiser to err on the side of safety and seek a physical evaluation first. That is of paramount importance and the first step in any exercise recommendation.”1 Improved aerobic fitness, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility are the goals of a well-balanced exercise program. Aerobic exercise is defined as any rhythmic activity that can be maintained for a prolonged period using large muscle groups. Flexibility exercise, which is often overlooked in many regimens, may include static flexibility — stretching and holding that stretch for 30 or more seconds; proprioceptive flexibility-stretching a body part to near maximum range, then applying a counter-resistance or contraction by the opposing muscle; and dynamic flexibility-making more ballistic motions that allow the joint to stretch actively through its range of motion. As Dr. Ray explains, a football punter will perform a few practice kicks without the ball, extending his foot way above his head, to prepare his muscles for the kick that counts. A baseball player will swing the bat several times prior to coming to the plate — sometimes with a weight attached to the bat. Golfers, too, swing their clubs before addressing the ball. These are all types of ballistic stretches.
Quietly and with little fanfare, Walgreens has begun stalking the fitness craze with a growing selection of high-ticket exercise equipment. Customers wont see the companys selection of elliptical trainers, weight benches, exercise cycles, body fat monitors and motorized treadmills in stores, however. The products–some of which range in price from about $300 up to $600 or more–are offered only at the companys Web site, Walgreens.com, for shipment direct to customers homes. On the high end: a Weider brand Platinum 800 Home Gym, offered on Walgreens.com for $999.99. But the site also purveys plenty of lower-ticket fitness and health products, including yoga and Pilates kits, low-carb snacks and dietary supplements.

Proposed Legislation Would Expand the Chiropractic Benefit Worldwide Dynamic Chiropractic examines House Resolutions 5122 and 5202, two important pieces of legislation that would significantly impact the provision of chiropractic services to U.S. military personnel and veterans around the world. Providing chiropractic benefits to the nations veterans has been a goal of the chiropractic profession for decades. B.J. Palmer first promulgated the idea of making chiropractic a health benefit for veterans as early as 1937, and even succeeded in having a bill introduced in Congress that would have given veterans access to chiropractic services. While Dr. Palmers original efforts were unsuccessful, the profession finally reached its goal in January 2002, when President George W. Bush signed into law the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Programs Enhancement Act, which established a permanent chiropractic benefit within the Veterans Affairs health care system.
A Lack of Trust or a Lack of Honor? The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) situation (please see “Chiropractic Unity Betrayed?” on the front page of this issue) brings several issues to light about the ability of our chiropractic organizations to work together, trust is one of those issues. While the answer is obvious (a lack of trust), it underscores the basic deficit that is holding the chiropractic profession down politically. The ACC didnt feel comfortable taking their “word” for it. The ACC wanted it in writing, but even that failed.
Sports Chiropractic EDITORS: ROBERT D. MOOTZ, DC, AND KEVIN MCCARTHY, DC PUBLISHER: ASPENPart One of this book is devoted to conditioning and exercise injury prevention with articles on the health benefits of exercise, aerobic conditioning related to injury prevention and rehabilitation, weight training, and chiropractic spinal care of the athlete. The articles are well-written and supplemented appropriately with illustrations and photographs. This section has extensive appendices covering topics from readiness questionnaires to examinations to consent forms and recommendations for preventing injuries to major components of the musculoskeletal system. They will provide the practicing doctor of chiropractic with some ready-made forms to use in a sports chiropractic practice. The second part of this compilation addresses injury care. There are sections on assuring quality of care, diagnosis and management of common injuries to the knee, lower leg, and foot, and sections on spinal stabilization and myofascial pain syndromes. In addition to excellent photographs demonstrating most of the procedures, these sections-like others in the book-have accompanying algorithms. TICC is well known for its extensive use of quality algorithms. These most definitely enhance and facilitate the learning experience. For those not familiar with these wonderful tools, they provide a step-by-step approach to making clinical decisions and deciding which procedure should follow. They take the clinician through some complex processes in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.

The Lying Game James W. Loewen, a guy obsessed with the dissemination of misinformation (”Lies My Teacher Told Me”) is back with “Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong” (Touchstone, $15). Its not precisely a travel guide, but its a good guide for travelers who visit historic sites. Did you know the Traditional Lincoln Birthplace Cabin in Kentucky is a composite of several old cabins, none of which are where the late great president was born? Some examples he gives are lies by omission, others an attempt to be politically correct - but inaccuracies are rife, nonetheless.
THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!
It is difficult to write objectively and dispassionately of something about which one feels strongly, for or against. Tell me a mans a foxhunter and I loves him at once said Mr Jorrocks. Today he is more likely to be an object of censure, Mr Jorrocks too. The future of hunting hangs in the balance, a prospect unthinkable to Will Ogilvie who wrote in the twenties:

Q My mother always gives me a hard time about my career choice, even though I love my job and am completely fulfilled by it. How can I get over my irritation with her about this and help her accept me for who I am? A Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg responds: You might say something like: I am coming to you because I love and respect you, and I know you love me and dont want me to mess up my life. But I need to feel that you respect my judgment and have faith that I am making the right choice for me at this time. Right now I am where I want to be. I need to feel that even though you may not agree, you respect my need to make my own choices.

Some epidemiologic studies have associated higher intakes of the antioxidant nutrients, especially vitamin E, with reduced risks of coronary heart disease. In some studies, this association has been observed for dietary vitamin E, but in other instances, the relationship was seen only in persons taking high doses of vitamin E as supplements. Protective effects of the other antioxidant nutrients - vitamin C and carotenoids - have also been observed in some epidemiological studies, but not in others. In the study population as a whole, there appeared to be a trend toward reduced coronary risk with higher vitamin E intake, but it was not statistically significant. Among women who did not take vitamin supplements, dietary vitamin E intake did show a significant inverse association with coronary heart disease risk. Women in the highest quintile of vitamin E intake had less than half the risk of death from coronary heart disease of women in the lowest quintile. Foods associated with reduced risk included margarine, nuts and seeds, and mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings. Intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, and supplementary vitamin E did not appear to be associated with the risk of death from coronary disease. These findings suggest that vitamin E intake may be protective against coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women and that such women can lower their risk without using vitamin supplements. However, the authors could not rule out the possibility that vitamin E consumed in food might be a marker for other dietary factors associated with coronary risk. The lack of effect of vitamin E in supplements should be interpreted with caution because information on the duration of supplement use was not available for this cohort and because relatively few women used high-dose supplements of vitamin E.
Although Tanzanias standard of care recommends that children receive a dose of vitamin A every six months, trial results showed that maternal vitamin A supplementation increased HIV transmission to children. The studys data and safety monitoring board recommended that vitamin A be discontinued from the trial regimen in September 2000. The researchers note in their article, Among HIV-infected US men, the relationship between vitamin A intake and HIV disease progression and mortality was U-shaped, suggesting that both low and high levels of intake are potentially harmful. The group that received multivitamins had higher CD4+ levels and significantly lower viral loads than those on placebo. (Vitamin A combined with the multivitamin was less effective.) Women taking the multivitamin had less fatigue, fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections, fewer rashes, and fewer oral and gastrointestinal problems associated with HIV/AIDS. These women were also less likely to reach WHO stage 4 or die of AIDS-related illness than those taking a placebo. I wonder if the inclusion of minerals known to support the immune system (i.e., selenium, zinc) in the multivitamin formula would increase this benefit. Retail prices for a years supply of the multivitamins used in the trial average about $15 per person. Fawzi WW, Msamanga GI, Spiegelman D et al. A randomized trial of multivitamin supplements and HIV disease progression and mortality. NEJM. 2004; 351(1): 23-32. Available at http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/351/1/23. This report describes six cases of hypovitaminosis D in women who had immigrated to The Netherlands from Morocco (two cases), Pakistan (two cases), Surinam, or Turkey. In all six cases, there was a long delay (7 to 103 months) between the onset of symptoms and the correct diagnosis. All of the women were subjected to multiple diagnostic tests, X-rays, and treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other medicines, four underwent extensive physiotherapy, and one with stomach pains underwent unnecessary surgery because her symptoms were believed to be due to gallbladder disease. The authors conclude that hypovitaminosis D osteopathy in women who have immigrated to Western Europe may remain undiagnosed for an unacceptably long time. A higher degree of suspicion in this patient group should shorten the delay and may reduce the number of undue investigations.Jeannine FJB Nellen, Yvo M Smulders, PH Jos Frissen, Ed H Slaats, and Joseph Silberbusch, Hypovitaminosis D in Immigrant Women: Slow to Be Diagnosed, BMJ 312(7030):570-572 (2 Mar 1996) [Correspondence: Dr Jeannine FJB Nellen, Dept of Internal Medicine, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, 1e Oosterparkstraat 279, PO Box 95500, 1090 HM Amsterdam, The Netherlands]

250 colour illustrations L25 Thames Hudson ISBN 0-500-01886-3 The books introduction charts the legacy of European safari style, devoted to the pursuits of adventure and hunting with as many home comforts as possible. This style was first established in the early years of the Indian Raj, and readily transposed itself to exploring Africa. Some of the properties date from the early years of European colonialism, redolent of the whole `Happy Valley era, while others are more contemporary either being built or adapted more recently. Whatever the provenances, each home, safari lodge or camp is described with lavish colour plates. Interiors are invariably relaxed, comfortable and dedicated to fine living. The use of African themes and indigenous crafts and materials is compelling, but the sumptuous photography (familiar to readers of architecture and interior design magazines), while technically flawless, is a little unnerving. It is completely devoid of any human insight! Perhaps the thinking is that if you see anybody, be they owners, guests or workers, youll be distracted from the interiors splendours. But the book does offer the opportunity to put yourself in the picture. An index of properties that are available to paying guests, along with their overseas agents, is provided.

THE ADVENTURES of Bob the Builder may have inspired a future generation of construction workers, and the plumbing industry - faced with a severe staff shortage - has decided to take a leaf out of the same book by launching a series of adventures featuring Peter the Plumber. Some plumbers earn upwards of pounds 70,000 a year, but despite the lure of a lucrative career the industry fears it may have difficulty attracting the 29,000 recruits that it says it needs to meet demand. In the ominously titled Peter the Plumber rescues Mum and Dad from a Flood, Peter has to save the day when a hapless housewife tries to fix a dripping tap in the middle of the night.

There have been many milestones in model design throughout the history of R/C model flying- To choose the most important models-those that had the biggest impact on the hobby– would be a difficult task. I can think of a number of models in many categories that would qualify as “new and important” developments. What really makes the Big Guff a milestone is not the model itself. It was a combination of the model, a reliable radio system and the Goods efforts to demonstrate them for the purpose of obtaining dedicated, hobby– related radio frequencies. If not for the Good brothers, we would not have received our first radio channel (27.225MHz) as soon as we did: March 1952. It is good to know that historians have acknowledged the importance of the Big Guff and have given it a place in the Smithsonians Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. (A replica of the Big Guff hangs in the AMA Museum in Muncie, IN.) In the 1940s and early 1950s, most R/C models were no more than controlled, free-flight models, and we could fly only one model at a time on our single radio channel. Generally, the only control was a sequenced rudder (right, neutral, left, neutral, etc.) controlled via a push-button on the transmitter. Throttle control (when it was used) was obtained with dual ignition points. Remember, the glow plug didnt come along until 1947.

Streamlined counters and cabinets offer an uncluttered look and help the remodel blend with the family area it faces. Replacing the original fluorescent ceiling, recessed down lights in a U-shaped soffit shine directly on work areas. In place of a gold and orange color scheme, mat-finish almond-tone plastic laminate covers counters and European-style invisible-hinge cabinets and drawer fronts. Below the counters, more space-efficient drawers replaced cabinets.
Out for views, up for light: those are the directions this tall, four-sided bay takes to gain garden views. Since the shallow pitch of the existing roof would have cramped the high, open greenhouse look the Starrs wanted, designer Linda Thornton of Carmel, California, gave the bay an octagonal roof of its own. It rises almost 3 feet above the existing roof, radiating from a central point above the eave line. Half of it notches into the old roof; the other half extends beyond to top the four glass walls. Only three support posts obstruct garden views through the glass panes. Outside, a planter wraps around the base of the bay, softening the expanse of concrete patio.

Newspaper and media company Mirror Group appointed Mr Victor Blank as its chairman yesterday, replacing Sir Robert Clark who is retiring after six years with the company. The move was welcomed by analysts who said that Mr Blanks arrival could herald a period of change at the group, which has seen its shares underperform the market in recent months. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.
Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

When the previous statement on foreign exchange was discussed at the Accounting Practices Committee we were of the view that the statement should include a definition of the date of the transaction due to the confusion surrounding this concept. We consulted with our legal colleagues and were informed that, if an order was placed for goods or services, the date the order was accepted was the date of the transaction. We attempted to get this entrenched in the statement but failed at the APB level. After much confusion, it was generally agreed that the cost of the inventory in the above example would be R65O if no cover contract was entered into or if cover was taken but hedge accounting was not permitted. It was also generally agreed that if cover was taken and hedge accounting was permitted, the cost of the inventory would be R6oo (the spot rate at the date the deal was made) plus RS (being the cost of the premium attributable to the inventory, i.e. Ri5-Rio) or R6o5. Then along came AC 133 with its embedded derivative in a host supply contract concept. It stated that if the deal was done in a currency that was not the currency of one of the parties to the transaction and the product subject to the transaction was not routinely bought and sold in the currency in which the transaction was entered into, there was an embedded derivative in the contract that had to be separated from the host contract. In the above situation, the embedded derivative would have been a liability of R45 (R6,6o - R6,is). The only way that could understand this concept was to see the embedded derivative liability as an expression of sadness that the deal was entered into in dollars and not in Rand. If the Rand went the other way, it would have been an asset, i.e. an expression of happiness. (A banker once asked me jokingly if he could lend money to a company based on the value of its embedded derivatives in its supply contracts!)
WAS THAT a date. or not?” Gone are the days when a man and a woman meeting over a drink knew the outing was undoubtedly a first date. With lines blurring between the platonic and the romantic, defining what constitutes a first date has become a guessing game, as maddening as catching a gnat with chopsticks. The various intentions behind a first date, from finding a mate to bedding a casual-sex partner, has forced many singles to define exactly what it is.

Im a registered nurse in the emergency unit at a small hospital. I receive many calls from people asking for advice about how to manage their health problems. Should registered nurses agree to give advice to people over the phone?Giving telephone advice is not a new role for registered nurses. For example, telephone advice is one of the key services offered by registered nurses working in poison control programs. As well, public health nurses regularly advise people over the phone regarding well-child care. Registered nurses working at the BC NurseLine also provide health information and advice to people via telephone. These kinds of services and programs demonstrate that telephone advice can be a safe and effective way to assist people to make decisions about their health needs.Registered nurses who provide telephone advice are often actually engaged in triaging. Based on the needs of the caller, these registered nurses are engaged in a teaching or counselling role, offering information about nursing care, or facilitating access to health care services by directing the caller to an appropriate provider or level of service so the care needs of the individual can be met. All of these activities are recognized components of registered nursing practice.
Telephone ScramblerIn a phone scrambling system, information sent over a public switched telephone network, or PSTN, is scrambled. The authentication of the unscrambling device at the receiving end is checked, and when an incoming message is received, it remains inaccessible until a special code or identification number is entered. One consumer system, according to a report in the trade journal Security, uses voice coding technology as a further security measure. The principle of telephone scrambling is similar to that applied in making a Web site secure so that users can enter financial information without fear that this data will be intercepted. In both cases, sophisticated encryption makes it all but impossible for interlopers to obtain the desired information.

Some legal advice on aspects of the Internet. David Lewis (1) E-payment and e-money trends are you protected? Currently the Internet lacks a fast, easy and secure way to let consumers buy and sell electronically, and theres no electronic money system on the market that is legal tender.

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

Cabinet choices Cabinets usually devour the bulk of a budget during a kitchen remodel. Because they are a major investment, youll need to sort through the available options and make choices with confidence. Heres how: - If existing cabinets are of good quality, are in excellent working condition and the layout functions well, the most affordable option is to freshen them up by restaining or painting. Another alternative, refacing, involves installing a new veneer on the exterior of the cabinet box and replacing the doors and drawer fronts, and should be handled by a professional.

Jewelry Handbook 560 West Main Street, Suite C-200, Alhambra, CA 91801
Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will. The fashion for decorative emblems and badges was taken up with enthusiasm in the courts of Europe during the Renaissance. Both devotional and amorous allusions are common in these decorative devices, which closely echo contemporary jewel work. One of the most charming designs for an emblem shows Cupid rashly pursuing the sweetness of the honeycomb only to be stung by the bees who have made it (Pl. XIII), a poignant allegory of the pleasure and pain of love. The Netherlandish hat badge in Plate IX is an emblem depicting a woman choosing between two suitors surrounded by a motto that can be translated “love is something but money is everything.”
As art jewelry comes into its own in America, galleries are clasping onto the trend and finding success with the art/jewelry mix. Throughout the world, body ornamentation is an ancient and time-honored art form. Yet in the United States, jewelry as art has only recently come into its own. The distinction between mass-produced jewelry and art jewelry is not just in the quantity but the design, said jewelry artist Gretchen Kubacky of Los Angeles. Ive seen some stunningly high-quality designs in a department store that wouldnt be considered fine art, and Ive seen $5,000 diamond earrings that have no design quality to them. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Swathed from top to toe in bandages, a young woman looks up at the sky. True to her prediction, the plane she is waiting to observe crashes shortly after take-off, killing 127 people. The boyfriend accused of causing her dreadful burns should have been on that flight, but his remains cant be found in the wreckage. Instead, the play discovers him in the middle of the desert in the company of a figure wearing an identical suit. The missing mans skin is baked. He has lost all sense of identity. What, this drama asks, would it be like to go through a gradual dream-like process of rediscovering the horror of who you were and to realise that, through the fluke of survival, you have been punished by not being punished? A metaphysical mystery story; an existential memory play; a psychological study of blank indifference; a pitch-black jest - Tear From A Glass Eye manages, beguilingly, to be all of these things and in Erica Whymans splendid production at The Gate, these various elements achieve a brilliant artistic unity. Runway lights flash forebodingly along Soutra Gilmores zig-zag wing-like set, which has just the right denuded, abstract feel and pointedly offers no hiding place for Ian Drysdales terminally perplexed Titus, who is drawn back into his past by an enigmatic alter ego (Darrell DSilva). The mixed tone of the play suggests that life is both an ineffable nightmare and a down-to-earth practical joke. The drama is haunted by the eponymous symbol whose significance we learn from flashbacks. Returning from the War, Tituss amputated father (a superbly anarchic James Hayes) tries, counterproductively, to rush intimacy with his young son. As a curiosity, he gives the boy a glass eye he found next to a dead body in the desert. Made of sand, this object, with its changeless unconcerned stare, comes to represent a different kind of desert - that state of emotional indifference which is Tituss hell. It is a poetic image of which the young T.S. Eliot might not have been ashamed.

C CORPORATIONBecause the corporation is a separate entity, it is also viewed as an individual taxpayer by the Internal Revenue Service. As a result, corporations are subject to double taxation, which means that the profits are taxed once on the corporate level and a second time when they are distributed as dividends to the shareholders. (If a business is eligible, it may elect S corporation status to avoid this negative characteristic of C corporations.)
S CORPORATIONIn Choosing a Legal Structure for Your Business , Stuart Handmaker explains that Essentially, there isnt any difference between a C corporation and an S corporation. Each of them is a corporation, and each one has the same characteristics, shareholders, directors, officers, records, minute books, problems, and the like. The only real difference is that the S corporation has filed a special form with the Internal Revenue Service stating that it wants to be an S corporation. What makes the S corporation different from the C corporation, then, is that it has special status in the eyes of the IRS. In short, the S corporation is viewed as a partnership or sole proprietorship for taxation purposes. This means that the corporation itself is not taxed, as C corporations are; rather the S corporations profits are passed on to its shareholders, who pay income tax on that money. In nearly all other respects, though, the S corporation is essentially the same as the C corporation. Most importantly, S corporations receive the benefit of limited liability that goes along with being a corporation. The combined benefits of limited liability (the lack of which is the main drawback of partnerships or sole proprietorships) and avoidance of double taxation (the main drawback of C corporations) makes the S corporation the most popular legal structure amongst small business owners.
Amidst this grim backdrop, Aaron Feuersteins textile mill in Lawrence, Mass. burned down. Without hesitation, he announced that he wasnt going to pull up stakes and move to Mexico. He was going to rebuild the mill right there, in the state conservatives deride as “Taxachusetts.” Not only that, he was going to pay his workers a months wages to get them through the Christmas season.Soon everyone was talking about Feuerstein. He was an ABC News “Person of the Week.” He sat next to Hillary Clinton at die State of the Union address. Yet Feuerstein himself couldnt understand the fuss. “What?” he asked. “For doing the decent thing?” While his modesty may be excessive, his instinct is on the mark. By his example, he raised a pointed question: Why do we expect so little from major businesses these days?Certainly, that thought is abroad in the land. Not since Ralph Naders heyday in the early seventies have the words “corporate responsibility” come up so often in political debate. Because die prime messenger this time is Pat Buchanan, much of the mainstream media has dismissed the issue as the benighted economics of Bible-thumping ignorami. But the notion that corporations have responsibilities, just like real people, touches a deep chord; and while the term “corporate responsibility” may strike jaded modem ears as oxymoronic and naive, historically it is exactly right. “The corporation is a creature of the state,” the Supreme Court observed back in 1906. “It is presumed to be incorporated for the benefit of the public.”

Service, Resource and Training Needs of American Indian Vocational Rehabilitation Projects The United States grants federal recognition to 309 American Indian tribes and 197 tribal villages in Alaska (Federal Register, 1986). The 1980 U.S. Bureau of Census reported a population of 1.4 million American Indians. This compares with a population of 827,268 in 1970, and 551,669 in 1960. The American Indian population has nearly tripled in the 20 years from 1960 to 1980 (U.S. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, 1986). A recent BIA report (1989), titled Indian Service Population and Labor Force Estimates, lists the on or near reservation population at 949,075. The 1989 BIA report does not include the tribal members who are located in communities or urban areas outside reservations.
Manufacturing and Assembly
To date, a number of local companies have opted to support the mission by contracting with ADI. One case in point: AMI Industries, manufacturers of airline passenger seats, has hired ADI to do complete assembly on the precisely engineered components. “Our team has done such a good job for them,” said Barela, “that we now deliver a turn-key product - and work directly with AMIs vendors to pick up components, to assemble parts, and to deliver completed units. They have been very pleased with our work - and appreciate the precise quality of what we do.” Culinary and Catering Training: Caf Moreno
One of the organizations newest and fastest-growing employee training opportunities is ADIs culinary program, started in February 2002. Caf Moreno (named for its location in a PPMH facility on Moreno Street) Certified Executive Chef and program manager, Mike Longo, brings more than twenty-six years of experience to his position. His own career included an apprenticeship at The Broadmoor Hotel. He went on to serve as head chef at Glen Eyrie and at a local senior community prior to assuming his new role.
“I am happy to be able to provide our students with a valuable skillset,” he said, adding that his clients range in age from twenty-one to the mid-thirties. Within twelve to thirteen months, candidates can earn certification with the American Culinary Institute and go on to advanced careers,” Longo said. Caf Morenos services include catering for wedding receptions, office parties or meetings, banquets, fundraisers, cocktail parties and more.
In addition to a broad range of commercial catering for companies such as Stresscon and the Phil Long Dealerships, the Caf Moreno team has also won fixed contracts to provide meals for the Red Cross Shelter and for 100 meals a day for the Detox Center on Parkside Drive. Barela expects the culinary program to generate more than $300,000 this year — decreasing sole reliance on grants, subsidies and donations. Transportation Services
Responsible for 45 vehicles, ADI provides vehicle maintenance and shuttle services directly from local hotels/motels, to and from Colorado Springs, Denver and Pueblo.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] SOLDIERS and families approaching retirement face financial decisions that will have a major impact on their futures. As you tackle these decisions and plan for retirement, remember three things.
Employers have reacted to increased costs by shifting some obligations to employees. Most have already opted to provide cheaper 401(k) plans instead of traditional pensions, while others have shifted to cash-balance plans. Yet retirement experts warn that employees arent saving enough in their 401(k) plans to retire comfortably. And during the last downturn, some employers suspended 401(k) matching funds, making the plans more vulnerable to economic conditions. Companies that have maintained pensions–usually under pressure from unions–have been rewarded by stricter accounting rules, with more regulations on the way. Meanwhile, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., which backs those pension plans, is in worsening financial condition. It all adds up to a potentially greater problem for U.S. companies: a whole generation of Americans who cant afford many goods and services.
Early retirement, or retirement at any age, may be less than an enjoyable experience without sufficient income. Generally, financial planners recommend that an individual should strive to maintain 70 percent to 80 percent of his or her final working years income during retirement and have made provisions to increase income in retirement to keep up with inflation. A small but growing number of financial planners recommend that individuals should strive for 100 percent or more income replacement during retirement years. (3) The logic behind this recommendation is that individuals tend to spend more money when they have time to do what they would like to do. In planning for retirement at any age, the first task is to determine the income desired in retirement and examine how those income goals will be met. The exact amount of income that an individual needs in retirement is specific to each individuals financial circumstances and goals. For example, an individual or couple with a home that is paid for would li kely spend less on housing in retirement than an individual or couple who are still paying off their home or renting. Financial planners generally suggest that an individuals retirement plan include at least three important sources of retirement income. These sources usually include Social Security benefits, personal savings/investments, and employer/employee retirement accounts, such as defined benefit plans, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and IRAs. Of the aggregate income received by retired Americans, Social Security benefits consist of 42.5 percent; individual savings and investments generate 36 percent; and employer/employee retirement benefits make up 21.5 percent of retirement income. (4) The anticipated income from each of these sources should be carefully examined prior to making the decision to retire.

Fire sprinklers address the upholstered furniture hazard. A NEW STUDYreleased in October 2007 by Underwriters Laboratories in conjunction with the Fire Protection Research Foundation adds credibility to the characterization of polyurethane foams and similar materials as “solid gasoline.” The furnishings we surround ourselves with today pose a higher level of risk than in past decades, resulting in faster-developing fires and less time for escape. The need to address these very fast fires is becoming a concern in places likeNew Zealand, where authorities are demanding that fire protection engineers use specific design fires when developing performancebased designs. While engineers often explore the effects of varying growth rate fires termed “slow,” “medium,” “fast,” and “ultra-fast,” new research conducted at the University of Canterbury suggests that about 20 percent of the fires involving a single upholstered chair exceed the standard characterization of a “fast” fire, in which the fire grows to a size of 1 megawatt (approximating a fully developed upholstered chair) within 150 seconds. The fire continues to grow if other furniture becomes involved; an upholstered sofa alone can produce a 4-megawatt fire. For a reasonable level of safety in the broad range of occupancies that use upholstered furniture, the “ultrafast” fire scenario should be addressed.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.
The things some people will do for a white Christmas.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Marlon Brando exemplified the style in the film The Wild One, and the coat became a necessity for Hells Angels and other bikers who emblazoned their clubs name on the back. Rock stars and punks later latched on to this “bad boy” image of black leather, but leather jackets eventually found mainstream favor when manufacturers began creating leather in a variety of styles and colors, such as the brown bomber jacket and haute couture skirts and blazers. The mystique of the original biker style, however, endures.

By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.

H UNTING As a human activity, hunting is magnified in its significance by a deceptively simple feature: the evasiveness or resistance exhibited routinely by prey. Because of the behavioral challenges that it presents, hunting has had far-reaching consequences for key aspects of human social, psychological, and cultural life. Since the mid-1960s, for example, anthropologists have argued that
